Your Onlne Image #2

Your Online Image #2

You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.

What might you find that would make you not hire someone?

Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?

Below are a couple of articles that talk about how employers use social media to help screen applicants.

  1. If i find inappropriate pictures or pictures of them partying it would be a big red flag because if people who come to the business could find them and look them up and find that stuff. it would make the business look unprofesional

    2. I don't think memes in general can red flag you, unless if they were inappropriate

    3. I am with Landon on this one, but if the memes turn into cyberbullying and online harassment, then they probably shouldn't be working at a family friendly ice cream parlor.

    4. I think that as long as the memes are family friendly then you can post them. If they memes a insulting or making fun of people the you probably keep it to your self.

  4. If I were to not hire someone based off their online personality, it would be because they were actually a horrible person to others. Using Facebook is a great way to find out if that person is bad, since Facebook brings out the worst in people

    1. I agree because you get an inside scoop on what the person you might be hiring's image is on their social medias. If you didn't check their profiles, you could have missed a big part of what type of person you just hired.

    2. People might not always be bad but I see how it could become a problem. You don't want them to bring the company down if any problems come up.

  8. I wouldn't hire somebody that has any sort of inappropiate things such as drugs, alcohol, or nude photos on their Facebook because that doesn't sound like a person you would hire for a family friendly ice cream parlor.

  11. I would check someones profile before hiring because you want to make sure the person is respectful, kind, and appropriate. You own an ice cream parlor BELOVED by local families, don't you want to live up to that name and pick only the best for your business?

    1. Hopefully you can also check the person's background using other sources behind Facebook. Facebook could also be good if this person is doing everything right they could share information about the ice cream parlor on their Facebook account to promote the company.

  12. I think you could find out more about the person good and bad. And i don't think it is bad using it this way because if its out there you don't want your customers seeing them work at your store

  14. Also, another big thing I would check for is criminal records and I would check out who are their friends.

  15. Checking someones personal life through the internet is a way to fid out what they're like before hiring them but could also be an invasion of privacy . Yes, they put it out there for people to see and people to come across them but, you intentionally trying to find something bad that they've posted. Its a good thing but bad thing at the same time

  17. It would be unexceptable to find pictures of them doing illegal things such as underage drinking. You wouldn't want that person working at your business because it could cause problems with the law or others. I don't think there is a problem using Facebook in this way because it is out on social media they aren't trying to hide it.

    1. I agree with Darian about finding unacceptable things on someone profile. I wouldn't want someone with that kind of personality working for my business and bringing that type behavior into my work space. I also agree on how the use of Facebook or any other social medias isn't that much of a problem because if they post that stuff, they really aren't afraid of hiding it from others.

  18. You could find disturbing photos that people have posted on social media. There isn't really a problem with facebook but I think some people .People just have to be careful with what they post.

  19. Personally, I don't find it bad if owners look at internet profiles. You could see what their interests are, hobbies, and more. There is nothing wrong to look at a profile, because it is out there for a reason for people to look at it.You would want to know what your future employee does.

  20. If you didn't like what they posted including inappropriate pictures, you don't have to hire them. If they had pictures of them partying/drinking, etc. you wouldn't want people saying stuff and you getting in trouble. It would make the business look bad, especially if everyone knows.

  21. If I was the local ice cream parlor I would choose from the best. They would have to have a nice profile. have good communication skills, and the basics. By looking at an app like Facebook you can tell if you want them or not. The teen would represent your business and you want to be successful. By agreeing with some people, you wouldn't want to look bad and lose customers.

    1. Hiring someone to work for you really sets up your image as well. If you're hiring people that post and do inappropriate things, that can reflect on you and your business, and quality of work. They can make your work ethic look bad, and even crash your business.

  22. If you look through someones FaceBook or other social media's posts, you might find like inappropriate content, whether that be pictures or mean words, and that could lower your opinion of someone. It might be kind of weird to search through someones account, but if you're posting things that incriminate you or otherwise make you look bad, then why are you posting them in the first place?

  23. If a is posting political things and not being respectful of other peoples opinions thats a big red flag.

  24. You might find someone partying a lot or something that doesn't show they have a good work ethic. One bad thing on the internet and you are screwed for the job.
