IoT: The Internet of Things

IoT: The Internet of Things

- The screen on your refrigerator tells you that your blood sugar is running low, so you grab some fruit.

- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smartphone.

- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.

This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".

In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.

"The Internet of Things is the next generation of personal computing, whereby objects interact, potentially independently, with each other and with their environment,”

"The Internet of Things is the combination of sensors, actuators, distributed computing power..."

"Tiny detectors that can gather and relay data about location, activity, and health...", "The IoT makes it possible to monitor and control the location, condition, and behavior of objects, machinery, and devices through networks."

Here are some resources to look at that will help you understand the IoT. Take a look at them, and talk about what you think about the idea. Pros and cons.

  1. Some of the good things are that you can set a location in your car and it'll show you how to get there. some bad things are the government can track you or anyone that is smart enough and know what they are doing.

    1. I agree people can hack into your stuff and they could steal your car and sell your personal information.

    2. I agree because people could track everything that you're doing without you even knowing.

    3. I agree with Dylan that it can supply good things if you use it the correct way.

  2. Yes, internet can be very beneficial, but i personally do not feel like you can be able to connect your phone, thats a little ecsessive. Also it can be good like connecting your heart monitor to your phone to make sure it's in a good range.

    1. I think shayla is right because the internet can be really good and really bad.

    2. I agree that having your phone monitor your health can be good.

  3. I think the pros of having a lot of things being on the internet is that its a new wave of doing stuff you can track, talk to, and listen to
However you can have people tracking you and knowing what you can do 24/7

    1. I agree that there are pros of having stuff connected to the internet, but there are people getting data you all the time.

    2. There is always pros and cons of the stuff you can do on the internet. You can always get hacked or not get hacked.

  4. It can make life easier, but there is a downside to it all there is a chance, all the stuff that is connected to the internet can be hacked.

    1. I agree with Danny because once anything is on the internet it stays on there

    2. I agree because people can hack into anything on the internet.

    3. I agree it does make life much easier, how it gives you the ability to connect and talk to people anywhere anytime, or for devices to connect and be able to communicate and already have your data.

  5. Internet can be a good or bad thing depends like you have health and passwords saved so then you don't need to but also can leave your usernames and passwords out for hackers.

    1. I agree because you don't want to leave personal info about yourself in your device for a hacker to steal easily.

      Delete
    2. I agree because you can have important information, personal info or otherwise, accessible to you at pretty much all times, but it can also be dangerous because someone could get ahold of it as well.

  6. I think some of the pros are that you can remotely access all of your devices. You can open your garage door from anywhere on your phone or computer. You can also unlock and lock you front door. Some of the cons are that people can hack into your stuff if it is on the internet.

    1. I agree with the statement since locating stuff can be easy, but I wouldn't do it since others will always track your data.

      Delete
    2. I agree that being connected to everything can be a good thing, because there are people that are physically impaired, so then they could do things such as opening their garage door with just a click on their phone/remote.

    3. I agree with Mason completely on the con's

  7. the internet is a good thing cause all of the advantages but everything should not be conected cause the powers supply is not that reliable and can be hacked or shut off

    1. I was thinking the same thing, because if a powerline blew up or something, then none of the products would really work. But how often does something like that really happen.

  8. Yet there are loads of good things you can do with more internet connection, like get notified when you need juice, learn how far you walked today, and even turn down the temperature in your house from anohter place. But with more internet connection, means that hackers can become a bigger problem.

    1. all of the good things just make u lazy though in my opinion because it just lets u not have to remember things

      Delete
    2. I wouldn't really call it being lazy, I would call it called productivity because you then have more time to do other things.

      Delete
    3. not really because no one in the world wants to work anymore and by not being social and just hiding behind a computer that doesn't make them productive

      Delete
    4. I don't even know what you are talking about. I'm trying to say if I'm at the store or something, I can look into my fridge through my phone instead of calling people and asking them, or even going home and checking myself.

      Delete
    5. im not saying in that situation im talking about say u have to remember something that should be ur responsibility not ur phone's

      Delete
    6. In your situation, if you have to remember something, you should put it on your phone incase if you don't have a good memory or you are acutally are doing other tasks.

      Delete
    7. it makes u lazy cause u don't have to use your brain to hear an alarm to remeber something instead of having to use your brain

      Delete
    8. It's called productivity because you can do other tasks instead.

      Delete
    9. i agree with tanner he is correct. It would be productivity not being lazy. you would have a lot more time to do other stuff.

  9. Some pros about all these devices being in modern things is that you could track your car easily, unlock/lock your doors, keep track of your steps and calories. But in my opinion, I personally wouldn't want someone knowing where I am or what I'm doing 24/7. A hacker could easily get all of your health records and passwords, and even unlock your doors and steal from your accounts and so forth.

    1. I agree with the unlocking doors and I totally agree with the part on how you don't want people knowing your personal info.

    2. I think there is so much unnecessary information being shared through some things that don't need to be shared. It may not always be worth it.

      Delete
    3. I agree having someone being able to track you and know everything your doing . someone being able to track your car.

      Delete
    4. i agree like people don't understand that your surroundings are pretty easy to locate etc especially in a small town.

      Delete
  10. I think being connected to things is beneficial because it can monitor things such as health and fitness. also if you can access stuff remotely you don't have to be nearby to do things such as lock your door, or lower the temperature.

    1. I think these are great things but sometimes it is not necessary to be able to do things like lock your door from your phone. I feel like it could be a bigger risk than anything.

  11. Some of the good things are you can actually learn how far you walked or you can for example find your location and use maps in your car. Some of the cons are that it makes mistakes and has mis-understandings.

    ReplyDelete
  12. some of the cons of everything being connected is that people can find your location, and they can also potentially find a lot of your personal information

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with that because people could steal your identity.

      Delete
    2. Everyone's data gets tracked and sold everyday, especially location and private data.

      Delete
    3. i agree mostly beccause hackers think they are invincable because they are behind a computer so they do bad things

      Delete
    4. I think people need to be safer with the things they do on the internet. The companies also have to be better with keeping information safe.

      Delete
    5. People definetly need to be safer on what you do on the internet, nothing is ever really private

      Delete
  13. But with all these good things, come some risk. You risk giving away your location and other important stuff like privacy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. the cons of the internet is that people can track you and know everything your doing and someone could be watching everything your doing

    ReplyDelete
  15. Location tracking is just a good way for 3rd party companies to sell as much cable from you as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Getting your location tracked could be bad because someone could see you routine everyday and then they set up a plan and kidnap you.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think there are many pros and cons of the internet. It is great that you can track and keep up with nearly anything with basically no effort to do so. It can be bad though because others can do the same and get your information because you have so much out there.

    1. i agree with Darian internet is 50/50 with good and bad but everything stays on the internet so it's easy for a hacker or just about anyone to get personal information

      Delete
  18. I agree with Darian because you wouldn't want other people knowing your location or private information. People could get into your house, get into your accounts like a bank account your email, and more. Also people could try to take your money.

    1. But sometimes you will need people to know whwre you are like your parents

  19. Some pros of the Internet of things are having good communication with people, it costs less, easy access to information, and more. For information access you can get information from anywhere at about anytime. The Internet of things make life easier.

    1. I agree with Nicole about the pros of having better communication with friends, less cost, etc. but I also disagree, the Internet doesn't make all things in life easier. It could lead to being left out by friends, posting things just for the attention, online bullying, access to banking accounts and passwords and so forth.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Nicole that shopping online can be cheeper than in store.

      Delete
  20. I agree with a lot of people that cons of the internet of things are privacy and security. Very important information can lead to risks. Also the IoT can lead to lesser jobs, dependability, and more.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think you need to be very couches when posting on the web. You should act like your parents or boss would post it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So I think that while there are many advantages to having something like the IoT, theres always drawbacks. It is amazing how practically EVERYTHING could be connected and able to communicate, and that can make people's lives much much easier in many aspects. However, the risk of having so many things connected, storing and collecting info about you is that someone could get so much data on you if they managed to get into some device of yours, and got a hold of sensitive personal info. So while this is a wonderful thing, there are many potential consequences.
