What To Do About Misinformation...?
Social Media Is a Huge source of information - not all of it is GOOD information. Urban legends, myths, conspiracy theories and other types of false information are everywhere, and it can be difficult to determine what is really true. It's bad enough if this type of information would affect or even harm us individually, but we know that it can also affect us on a global scale, such as influencing an election (and not just the US elections).
Obviously, we have to learn how to identify information that might be biased or untrue - but what about those sources that host the information, such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube? What responsibilities do they have?
The 60 Minutes video we watched in class talks about YouTube and its policies regarding invalid or harmful information. What do you think? Should entities like YouTube, Facebook, etc. be responsible for blocking or identifying misinformation, or should it be the responsibility of the viewer to educate themselves about how to spot "fake news"?

I feel like its completely up to the company itself to choose wether or not they want to spend the money on blocking the "fake news" from its website as well as facebook instagram ect. But if they don't i feel like for the people seeing it they should know that alot of it isn't true. Alot of people do youtube as a full time job so the ads they put in their videos are what make them money.
ReplyDeleteI agree that should be a job at Youtube to factcheck videos but it also our job to make sure we either believe or not believe something. No one can make you believe something.
DeleteYoutube could check all the ads, but they have an open platform where anyone can post almost anything. It would also be hard to determine what is fake or inappropriate, and what is safe.
DeleteThe company should check up on anything that seems to be "fake news" in a matter of seconds the moment it is posted. I absolutely agree that it could be costing the company lots of money to remove it from the web, and how they feel like people won't believe it at all, but that doesn't mean they should just leave that out there for the whole world to see and possibly believe.
DeleteI think that it is the website that should have to fact check things. It is there job to maintain the website and fact check everything. It is kind of our job to make sure that what we are watching is true. It is the viewers fault if they believe something that is not true.
ReplyDeleteI agree that they should have someone fact check all the videos on there website.
DeleteI agree with mason because they own the website they should be responsible.
DeleteI agree that company or website should have to fact check things because they should be making sure that everything on their site is real. But it's really all up to the person if they choose to believe something or not.
Deletei agree cause only certain thing should be token down for false information.
DeleteWhile it is the company's job to monitor their content and things like that, I think that people should be aware of what they're looking at, and be able to logically think and figure out if what they're watching or reading even is a realistic thing.
DeleteI think YouTube should block videos so we wouldn't have to see the fake news videos but I also believe we all should know by now how to spot the difference between real and fake news.
ReplyDeleteYou also have to consider that millions of hours of youtube videos are uploaded in a single day, so it would be very hard to filter every video.
DeleteI agree because there's no way you can see all of the false information & then they're going to target certain groups of people, regardless if the news is true or not.
DeleteI agree, but it is really hard for them to stay on top of all these kinds of videos being posted, the way they just keep flooding in. So I agree too with that people should educate themselves and know what they're looking at.
DeleteI think they should be responsible for invaild information. They should be because they own the website.
ReplyDeleteI agree because they should get some type of penalty for the stuff the have on there website.
Deletei agree they own the website so they have all the control to be able to take off or put up information they do or don't want on there
DeleteI agree that they should be responsible for the fake information on their site. But with Youtube, you can't expect them to go through all the videos that are uploaded to the site a day.
DeleteI believe that it should be up to the viewers to determine what is real and what is fake. People should be able to separate the reals from the fakes by themselves. There are so many videos that get uploaded onto Youtube that the workers at youtube wouldn't be able to review and go over every video to fact check it.
ReplyDeleteI agree yet it's their website and their page and someone might end up suing the company for them allowing fake news and/or allowing inappropriate content on their childs' main page.
DeleteI agree but that could also not work as well as you think since people like start problems for there own benefit.
DeleteI think they should block all the fake news, because could be something that could affect the elections in the U.S. or in some other country.
ReplyDeleteI agree with danny because fake news could ruin a president election if someone spreads fake news.
DeleteI think that fake news can affect politics a lot. I don't think they can block everything but people need to be smart about what they are reading and catch things that are off.
DeleteI agree fake news most times leads to bigger problems.
DeleteI agree with danny because there was a lot of fake news for the last election that almost ruined a lot of people running for president
DeleteI think that the platform should spot fake news because it can take just one person to spread word about fake news and make everybody believe in something that isn't true. Also the viewer should be aware of what they are looking at.
ReplyDeleteI agree It can take just one person.
DeleteI absolutely agree, one person can display any type of fake news they want out there in a matter of seconds, then it spreads like wildfire across the internet.
DeleteI feel these websites should be spending money on blocking fake news fake ads. These websites need to be able to block some of these otherwise it can block some key decisions in government, sports, etc... Websites should absolutely be accountable for invalid information.
ReplyDeleteI think that they should block fake news ads too, because just one fake ad could change the way many people think of that one person.

DeleteI agree because the way they look at that person could completely change if they see a fake picture of them doing something. I think
Deletei agree because these websites have all this money and the could spend a little bit just to block them.
DeleteThe sources like YouTube or Facebook do have responsibilities with letting people watch, like, share, comment and upload their own videos. In my opinion, I say the company should take full responsibility for being able to block or identify misinformation before the viewer is able to see it. Yes, it can be difficult to tell whether or not a video is appropriate for the public because of certain violence or actions shown. But also the viewer could have a sense or feeling that something isn't true and not view the post or site in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with what you are saying, except it would be a little hard to monitor all of the content uploaded to the platform, because millions of hours of youtube videos can be uploaded in only a few minutes. A lot of people would have to watch every minute of every video to completely protect the viewers.
DeleteThey technically are already doing that but it's working so well that there's a fake news video by ABC #5 on trending right now.
DeleteI agree with you 100% but their is so many workers that check the videos at a time when theres so many videos already being posted more and more while they attempted to check one bad one in an entire world of bad videos so sometimes we have to use common sense to say yes this is fake or no its real.
Deletei think that the company should monitor for big lies like someone being killed or a country being bombed stuff like that butt the little thing people should have to teach themselves.

ReplyDeleteI think that social media sites should not be taking action against false information because it's just creating more problems by controlling the narrative on what viewers should and must watch.
ReplyDeleteI dont agree landon because it is not creating more problems, it is helping people out. Sometimes kids don't know what is fake or not and if the websites dont take it down. They will believe something that wont be true
DeleteEverything you see on the internet isn't always true and i feel like everyone should know that by now. You never believe everything you see on the internet. Yes i do feel like youtube and instagram should block of most of it but the certainly can't get rid of all of it and that just the internet.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think people need to know what they are getting into with social media. Not everything is always believable.
DeleteI think that the companies should take the responsibility of taking down the fake news on their sites because it could mess up elections.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mason because people will probably believe what they see online. Social media sites are very popular in this world and they spread fake news and disinformation. It is important that government, business, and consumers work together to solve these problems including youtube. They should know what is right and wrong.
ReplyDeleteYes sometimes little kids don't know the difference between fake news ads and real ads.
DeleteFalse news stories are not just a problem in the United States, but afflict other countries around the world. Mainly in different countries, religious or caste issues can be explosive and lead to violence. People have been killed when false rumors have spread through digital/social media. If youtube, facebook, etc. removed some of this false news, things could be different. It would totally be up to them to bring it down or leave it up.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with nicole, it could change things for the better
DeleteI feel the government could do something about it. Around the world, they can encourage independent, professional journalism. Personally, I feel Individuals should follow a diversity of news sources, and be skeptical of what they read and watch.
ReplyDeleteI think that you should be aware of what news are real and what news is fake. It should be on your own and you need to figure it out by yourself
ReplyDeleteI think youtube and all those other sites should be able to tell if the fake news that is getting posted like i know they have a lot of money so they could always set up a bot. The bots could notice if the news was fake or not.

DeleteI agree it makes you wonder where all there extra money is going.
DeleteI don't think that companies should be expected to filter through all the content, and make sure that users are avoiding fake news. One, because there's so many things they'd have to go through, and it'd be pretty near impossible to eliminate all fakes. Most people are pretty aware of fake news as well, so they can decide for themselves what they want to view. And two, some people DO enjoy reading or watching things that would be otherwise removed, since they're not necessarily true. While companies can and should work to limit the amount of fake things out there, I don't think they should be required to crack down and make sure things are only factual. I think it's a hard line to toe when it comes to deciding what goes and what can stay, but it'll keep things from descending into chaos.
