You're Messed Up! (Social Media)

You're Messed Up!

You're addicted!  You're messed up!

Read the following articles (don't forget to read some of the comments after the articles). They all talk about the effects on teens from social networking, texting etc - all of this "new" technology.

What are the dangers?  We're not talking about why the internet itself is dangerous - not talking about predators.  We're talking about the quality of life here - your time; how social networking makes you feel about the world, how you feel about YOURSELF, and how it conditions you to behave.  "Real life" vs. "online life".

Your first post should be about what the negative effects of your online life might be. How might things like social networking (Facebook, Twitter) affect you in a negative way? This is a difficult question because you probably don't think that these things really are affecting you negatively.  You can handle it, right?

THEN, after a day or two, in your response to a fellow student's post, argue in FAVOR of social networking - how does it 'enhance' your life - how does it make your life better?

This is a 'deep topic'.  One sentence answers are NOT going to cut it, so really think about your answers, and argue your point.

  1. Some people should not be on the internet because that is the only think they do, they need to get off there phone and go outside.

  2. You shouldn't spend your whole life on your phone or laptop, because you could miss the little things in life. Having to take a picture of everything or every moment you want to remember isn't the way to remember things. Enjoy the moment and put your phone down.

    1. I agree people can miss the best they in there life and miss out on fun.

    2. This is true, but sometimes it is nice to have pictures of places or things to remind you of good times. You could also want to share things with other people who can't experience them with you in person. While being on a device constantly isn't good, it can be helpful and useful at times. It's just a matter of balance.

  3. I feel like people are going to be anti-social because of the internet because people don't need to interact with others as much as they used to.

    2. I agree because if people communicate on the internet they don't have to in person. If kids are not talking to there friends they will not know how to socialize with people.

    3. I agree that people are anti-social but some people are still able to talk in person even though they are on social media. You just have to make a good balance between the two things.

  4. I don't think people should stay on their phone all day. You should spend at least a few hours out side and just not stay on your phone all day

    2. I also agree because it's not healthy to stay inside all day. You should go outside for at least a hour or 2.

    3. I agree about spending time on the phone, but nowadays there is so much oppertunity on the internet. You can make a living off of the internet and many jobs require online skills.

    4. But you won't be able to learn the social skills you need in the real world

    5. Yeah I agree that people shouldn't stay on their phones all day. But social media can help us connect with people all around the world.

  5. I think there are a-lot of dangers of social media. One of them is distraction of the real world. You can get distracted by all of the pictures and websites. Another negative effect is harassment. You can get made fun of so easy now.

    1. I agree with you because a lot of people get made fun of on social media. It's also easy to get distracted by websites like youtube.

    2. There are a lot of dangers that come with using social media, but there are also very many positive aspects. You can connect with people all over the world so easily nowadays, and you can find people or a group with the same interests and/or hobbies as you. This also makes it hard to avoid getting sucked into the online world, because you can find so many things and get addicted. It is just hard, with anything, to get solely the positive parts and benefits of something, without it coming with drawbacks and negative things.

  6. I think that people should really start to limit their phone use, because I know people that would rather sit inside than go outside.

  10. There are a lot of cases of depression in teens from social networking. It can be caused from comparing yourself to others or getting cyberbullied. Personally, I don't feel that I am affected by it and I have never been bullied online. I think social media affects different people in different ways. Another negative with social media is not talking face to face with people as much. It can be hard to talk to someone in real life if you are just used to texting, but this isn't the case for everyone. People are all affected in different ways.

  11. I feel that in today's world people have gotten sucked into the internet. The internet is dangerous especially because people get addicted and comfortable with the internet. People need to get outside and experience nature. Some days if you're bored the internet isn't the answer just go out and experience nature.

  12. Today, people constantly revolve around their phones and as they get more and more used to it, they could start to be unsocial and start becoming depressed. Even though you can talk to people on different apps and see the different places they've been, it's not the same as talking to your best friend in real life or actually going to that place yourself. Put the phone down and go experience the social life for yourself, not on a screen.

  13. Negative effects of social media is that relying on your phone for socializing with others can make you feel isolated and lonely. Actual socializing would prevent this isolation from others.

  14. If you always depend on social media you will have no social skills in the real world. And you won't know how to talk to people

  15. SInce everyone either said depression or going outside, the internet could affect social media by having negative side effects such as a lack of sleep and having bad eyes. If you spend most your time on the internet texting or doing anything you could be stressed. This can impact your health by making you be negative or angry. You don't want to be addicted to the internet because it could get out of hand.

    1. I agree because many teens and even adults can get stressed from the internet. Lack of sleep and having bad eyes is a really good example of the negative sides of being on the web, and you really don't want to get too addicted to your device because it absolutely can get out of hand. ^

  16. Social media also has positives. You can learn a lot of new things on the internet. It also helps to talk to people when you don't get to see them often. You can also make friends if you are smart about it. There are ups and downs about social media, but it just depends on how you use it.

  17. The internet has a lot of benefits including staying in touch with friends and family. You can stay in touch with anyone through about any app. Another positive of being on social media is staying on new trends and and know about recent news.

  18. I agree with Chandler because it is true a lot of people are addicted to the internet. About 420 million people are addicted to the internet worldwide and 4 out of 10 children are addicted. A way you could fix that is by turning off your notifications or plan some breaks.

  19. people can be addicted to the internet sometimes they'll be so addicted that they'll choose staying inside instead of going out.

  20. the internet can be a good thing because if you have a friend move away or a family member that lives in a different county you can easily keep in contact with them

    ReplyDelete
  21. social media can also be a good as if your close friend leaves and you guys still want to keep in contact. They could be one snap or phone call away

  22. Negative effects of online life can be many different things. Overusing social media can lead to a number of problems, even addiction. The addiction, in turn, can also cause depression, anxiety, stress, and more issues. Social media usage can result in poor body image and self-consciousness, and even loss in self-worth. Effects of being on your phone too much, just in general, can be things like eyestrain and headaches. Constantly being on your phone can also lead to you skipping opportunities and missing out on other enjoyable things in life. Sometimes you just need to disconnect and appreciate the world around you.

  23. People really need to decrease their phone usage because its starting to get a little out of hand. There are so many people that rely on their phone for everything and its really not okay.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'd say to decrease your phone time because it has affect on your brain and your social life. This is why a lot of children don't get much sleep is because they don't put their phone down.
